In order to prepare yourself for climbing Ecuador's highest mountains, good acclimatization is absolutely essential. In this section you find a number of acclimatization tours, which can be perfectly combined with the summits in our program. Quito's TelefériQo takes us up to the Cruz Loma at approximately 4.100 m. Here we enjoy stunning views over Quito and the nearby volcanoes. Cruz Loma is also the starting point for the hike to the summit of Rucu Pichincha. The tour is technically not difficult and the way to the summit takes around 3 hours.

Guagua Pichincha is one of the 3 Pichincha summits and an active volcano in the west of Quito. Guagua means child in the Quechua language. The tour is a non-technical hike and perfect for acclimatization. We start at a parking place in Lloa at 4.150 m. Reaching the summit takes approximately 4 hours.

Pasochoa is in the southeast of Quito and a perfect choice for starting your acclimatization. The summit is an extinct volcano. The tour is technically not difficult and the way to the summit takes around 4 hours. On a clear day you can enjoy wonderful views of nearby mountains and valleys from Pasochoa.

About 17 km south from Otavalo, next to the Lagunas de Mojanda starts the tour to Fuya Fuya summit. The hike to the summit through the high altitude grasslands, known as "páramo" takes approximately 2 hours, whereas the last part offers several options to reach the peak. During the tour you can enjoy the view of the heart shaped Laguna Grande.

The hike around the mystic crater lake Laguna de Cuicocha in the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve takes approximately 4 hours. In the middle of the lake are 2 small islands, which look like a guinea pig's back. That's where the lake's name comes from: Cuicocha means "guinea pig lake" in the kichwa language.

Father Imbabura is an extinct volcano in the east of Otavalo. The tour is technically not difficult, but it takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to reach the summit.

The heart shaped Corazón is in the south of Quito. Corazón is another very popular mountain for acclimatization. The easy hike up to the summit takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. On the way you can enjoy marvellous views of Cotopaxi and other mountains.

If you are already a little acclimatized and quite fit Iliniza Norte is also an option for a day tour. The tour is technically not difficult, but it takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to reach the summit.

Sincholagua is situated in the Cotopaxi National Park, northern entrance, where the tour starts. It's a nice but quite long and in the upper part rather rock acclimatization hike. This demanding hike up to the summit takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. On the way you can enjoy marvellous views of Cotopaxi and other mountains.

Rumiñanhui is also situated in Cotopaxi National Park and the hike up to this rocky peak starts at Lagoon Limpiopungo. The tour is technically not difficult, but it takes approximately 4 to 5 hours to reach the summit. Rumiñahui has 2 summits - norther, central and southern. Our target will be the central summit. For the northern or southern peak some previous experience in rock climbing is very recommendable.

Quilotoa is one of the precious crater lakes in Ecuador and offers great potential for hikes in the surroundings. A wonderful acclimatization hike is the walk around the lake along the crater - approx. 10 km with ups and downs, passing Monte Juyende with 3.930 m (12,894 ft), the highest point on the tour. The round trip takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. On the way you can enjoy marvellous views of lake and its constantly changing colours.

Preparing yourself for your first glacier tour and / or refreshing your knowledge of techniques in ice and snow can be a great option for additional acclimatization as well. The glacier training takes place at Cayambe and can be easily inserted as a third day to your climbing program. The glacier is very accessible and close to the hut. Contents of the training will be adapted to your needs.
