Chimborazo is Ecuador's highest mountain and it is the point on earth, which is closest to the sun, confirmed once again by new measurements in 2016. The glacier tour from Marco Cruz' Chimborazo Lodge via the south face to Whymper summit is long and includes technically tricky parts. Therefore good acclimatization, fitness and previous mountaineering experience or adequate training are required.
The tour can be arranged for any day.
starting points & pick up:
Baños, Riobamba, Ambato, Machachi or Quito
From one of our starting points we drive towards Chimborazo National Park, up to Marco Cruz' famous and beautiful mountain lodge "Estrella de Chimborzo" (Chimborazo's star) now called Chimborazo Lodge at approximately 4.000 m / 13,000 ft. We prepare our equipment in the afternoon and enjoy the stunning surroundings at the food of Chimborazo.
After breakfast we hike up to our high camp at approximately 5.100 m / 16,700 ft with porters and donkeys for the equipment. The ascent takes about 5 to 6 hours. There we set up our camp and will spend the night in our tents.
Depending on group size and weather conditions we start the ascent to Chimborazo around midnight. The tour via the south face includes steep ramps on the glacier (40 m wall with 70 °). After 8 - 9 hours you will reach the summit. The descent to the hut takes another 5 to 6 hours. You will get back to the starting point in the evening.
